Why Research Experience Is Important For Grad School Apps

Why Research Experience Is Important For Grad School Apps GRE scores, GPA, transcripts, letters of recommendation, quality of undergrad school, admission essay/ personal statement, research, and even where you live can all impact your admission chances. Some of those factors are completely beyond your control and others are somewhat controllable. But, there is one factor that can greatly improve your chances of being accepted, and you can completely control it. That factor is research experience. Research experience is not required to apply to graduate school. But, it has become increasingly more popular, to the point where if you dont have a project, it hurts your chances. Research can be especially beneficial for fields that are constantly adapting like science and technology, but it may not be as important for constant fields like mathematics. But, it can still improve your chances. Follow these tips to produce a strong research project: Become a research assistant: Just about every student applying has a research project, and its painfully obvious when students are submitting one just for the sake of having it. But, as a research assistant, you will work with others (mostly professors, possibly other undergrad/grad students) and have more resources. You will also be held accountable for the outcome of the project, which can create better results. If you assist in completing a great research project, you may even be asked to join in on another project. Ultimately, becoming a research assistant shows a genuine commitment and interest, as opposed to doing research because you heard it can help your chances. Not to mention, you might get paid for it. Collaborate: Technically, it could look better on your application if you create a great research project with strong, practical findings all by yourself. But, this is probably your first try at research. So, partner with others. At the very least, you should work with one professor. But, if you can find a group of 3-5 people you can craft a better, more significant project. Most grad schools would rather see a great group research project than a mediocre sole project. It also shows grad schools that you can work well in groups, which is a major bonus. Start early: Start making contacts with professors as early as your freshman year of undergrad because it might take a few years to put together your project. A lot of students complete their first research project during their freshman/sophomore years, and then supplement it with additional projects. Imagine being able to tell a grad school that you have been researching a certain topic for the past 3-4 years. Choose a relevant topic: If your project can actually impact the industry youre writing about, youre going to have one of if not the best projects in the entire applicant pool. Its very difficult to create a project of that caliber. But, make sure yours is important to your industry. Spend time writing: You may have been living with this project for over six months and know everything about it. But, the grad schools youre applying to wont; so make sure you are clear and concise. They have hundreds of other projects to read too; so they probably wont spend extra time trying to figure out what yours is about. Consider the following structure to help your readers understand your project as quickly as possible: 1. Abstract section: State your hypothesis and how it could impact current industrial operations. Make sure you include completed works by other researchers and how your research builds off theirs or differs from theirs. That will help your reader better understand both your project and the current industrial state. 2. Introduction: Briefly state your basic findings and what factors you considered to reach those findings. Again, mention how your project works with existing research in chemistry, biology, etc. Briefly state how you set up your experiment and direct your reader to further sections for more information. Chances are, the admissions group will not read past your Abstract and Introduction section; so make sure they can understand the gist of your entire project through those sections. 3. Model: Write about how you set up the project, what your independent/dependent variables were and what you deem to be a significant result. You want to exhaust all possible confounding variables that may affect your outcome, which can enhance your credibility. Try to have multiple tests to reach the same conclusion, adding more support. This section can be a little bit longer than the previous two because you want to fully explain how you scientifically tried to prove or disprove your hypotheses. You do not need to state your findings in this section. 4. Solution/findings: This section seems basic, but it is not. You should state the most plausible outcome of your research; however, do not try to prove it as fact. You simply want to state the likelihood of your results, and you need to list all possible outcomes. You cant just write, based on our model, it is fair to conclude that ___________. Most research does not state absolutes. At best, it states what can be inferred or assumed from the experiment. Again, you need to list any confounding factors that may have affected your outcome and write a paragraph about each. Include models, graphs and charts. We offer incredible sciences tutorswho have extensive research experience and could help you. Youre not going to do perfect research during undergrad. In fact, very few can actually create perfect research. You just need to be as objective as possible. 6. Conclusion: Restate your hypothesis, how you tried to prove or disprove it (model) and what you found. This section should be fairly brief, but you need to include the industrial implications of your research. Answer this question: why is this important?

Simplest Form

Simplest Form Simplest form is the simplified form of a given question or equation. Simplifying is a very important and commonly used method in mathematics. Any mathematical equation, algebraic equation, expressions are reduced or simplified to simpler terms so that the answer is well represented. There are many mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication or division that are used to simplify the given terms or answers in an expression. Example 1: Simplify the fraction 300/600 to its simplest form? In the given fraction 300 /600, 300 is the numerator and 600 is the denominator. The fraction can be further simplified. Factoring the numerator and denominator gives: 300 = 2 * 2 * 3 * 5 * 5 600 = 2* 2 * 2 * 3 * 5 * 5 Now when these numbers are written as fractions there are some common factors. Therefore cancelling the common factors 300 / 600 can be written as 1 /2. Hence the simplified fraction of 300 /600 is 1/2. Example 2: Simplify the fraction 25 x3/ 5 x2 y to its simplest form? In the given fraction 25 x3/ 5 x2 y, 25 x3 is the numerator and 5 x2 y is the denominator. The fraction can be further simplified. Factoring the numerator and denominator gives: 25 x3 = 5 * 5 * x *x *x 5 x2 y = 5 * x *x * y Therefore cancelling the common factors 25 x3/ 5 x2 y can be written as 5x /y. Hence the simplified form is 5x/y.

Mindfulness as a Vehicle for Improving Cognition Reducing Stress

Mindfulness as a Vehicle for Improving Cognition Reducing Stress Improving Academic Performance There’s been a lot of talk recently (in certain psychology or educational circles, at least) on the topic of mindfulness practice and its various benefits. What was once a feature of eastern philosophy/religion has grown into an increasingly Western and somewhat mainstream activity. Two of the most potentially powerful benefits of mindfulness practice include cognitive enhancement and stress-reduction. As a result, mindfulness has started to be implemented in school systems and curricula worldwide. But what is the practice of mindfulness, just how effective is it, and how can we reap the benefits by incorporating mindfulness into our lives? . “Mindfulness can be defined as the psychological capacity to stay willfully present with one's experiences, with a non-judgmental or accepting attitude, engendering a warm and friendly openness and curiosity” (Kabat-Zinn, 2005). This article explores the science behind mindfulness practice and its effects on academic performance and stress reduction along with a few helpful tips to incorporate mindfulness practice into your daily living. The general notion behind mindfulness involves present awareness. That is to say, being as fully aware of the present moment as possible. Another pillar of the practice is to be “non-judgmental” in the assessment of the current situation. The roots of such an exercise date back to over 2,500 years ago in Buddhist tradition (as well as the tradition of various other Eastern modalities). By bringing ones awareness to the present moment, one ceases to invest their energy into the past and the future, both of which are simply creations of one’s mind to begin with. While deliberation of future choices and pontification of prior events are necessary from time to time, it is no surprise to hear that all too many of us spend too much time and energy “inside our heads” in one of these two places. As a result, we relinquish our ability to savor and utilize the only moment that truly exists: the present. But how can this concept benefit the striving student achieve success? Well for o ne, it increases attention span. These techniques help steady the mind and train its attentional capacity, while also increasing its breadth of focus (Zenner,C et al., 2014). Increasing attention span and the ability to focus on complex information sounds like a poweful benefit for a student. Here’s a simple exercise one can utilize to develop a state of mindfulness and garner these benefits: Technique: The “Anchor” The first technique we are going to discuss is “the anchor”. Much like the anchor used by a boat or a ship to keep it in place among the current and the waves, we must utilize a simple anchor to hold our awareness in place in the present moment. A common method utilized is to make your breath the anchor. Why our breath? Because it’s something we constantly do, all the time, as long as we live. Bringing awareness into the present moment is simply achieved by “feeling” your senses and sensations all throughout your body. By mindfully feeling my fingers hit the keys on my keyboard, my body pressed against the couch, my puppy’s fur pressed up against me while she sleeps, I draw my attention out of my mind and into the present moment. Thus, in this anchoring to our breath method, we simply become hyper aware of our breath. Really feel the air enter your nostrils or mouth, feel the temperature of the air, feel its sensations as it fills up your lungs with oxygen, vitality and l ife. As you breath out, repeat the process and really bring awareness to how the breath feels. By attempting to do this for every breath, you will notice your conscious mind being more involved with your surroundings and the present state of matters instead of living in the past of the future. Expanding on the “Anchor” technique: Several other variations of this technique may be utilized to develop mindfulness. All these variations have the same common element of bringing ones attention to their five senses. This sensory hyperawareness is what is key to establishing awareness of what is going on around you instead of what is going on in your head. Eating: Mindfulness can be utilized whilst eating by truly savoring the texture, taste and other properties of the food. In modern society, eating is often paired with conversation, television, and other social or entertainment activities. However, in some eastern cultures, such as China, it is encouraged to simply focus on eating and digestion when consuming a meal. The idea is that the extra energy spent doing something in addition to eating, can be focused into actually eating, digesting and enjoying the meal. Thus, engaging our senses during eating can help invoke a stronger sense of mindfulness among the practitioner. Other techniques to build mindfulness: Yoga Meditation Body Scan exercises (a gradual sweeping of attention through the body (Zenner,C et al., 2014). It is recommended the practitioner engages in about 45 minutes of home practice in mindfulness a day to maximize the benefits gained (Zenner,C et al., 2014). Mindfulness in the Treatment of Anxiety Stress The reduction of evaluation anxiety and stress among students, particularly in higher education is potentially one of the most significant, academic benefits to mindfulness practice. A study evaluating 70 higher education students earning either their bachelor’s or master’s revealed reduction in both cognitive and emotional components of anxiety (Dundas,I. et al., 2016). Mindfulness in the Treatment of Mental Illness Disease States While current psychology attempts to treat diseased states of mind, Buddhist practices like mindfulness were used to cultivate positive mind states and promote mental well-being (Wallace,B.A. 2006). Today, the applications and the benefits of Mindfulness based practices have extended both into the clinic and the classroom. Indeed, the two also come together when discussing the benefit of mindfulness for children with learning disorders (e.g. ADHD) and social anxiety disorders. With almost a fifth of children between the ages of thirteen to eighteen experiencing some sort of severe mental illnesses, it is clear that some sort of impactful and therapeutic intervention is necessary (Zenner, C et al., 2014). To date, the advancements made in the cognitive and psychological fields around mindfulness have far outpaced their introduction in individual's lives and in Western society and school systems, so we can expect to see such practices expanding farther and becoming much more common place in our education system. The data reveals the positive influences of such therapies among a variety of students in a variety of situations. The benefits extend into the clinical realm by treating various disease states. In conclusion, mindfulness based practice is considered by many to be one of the newest and most revolutionary psyhchological tools in recent memory (even though the practice is almost 3,000 years old...) We are in an age where we are learning how to unlock the full potential of our minds and new advancements are emerging from ancient traditions and practices. Whether it's meditation, yoga or anchoring yourself in your breath, try incorporating a mindfulness practice into your life today and observe the benefits over time. 2017 April 1st Fool`s Day Pranks

2017 April 1st Fool`s Day Pranks April 1st 2017 is April Fools day. If your friend ask for your help with harvesting picking freshly-grown spaghetti from his yard be weary and perhaps smile. Read on to find more famous pranks and our announcement that an medieval capital was found in the sea.April 1st Fools day is celebrated differently around the world. In the UK pranksters shout April fool! at the recipient, who becomes the April fool. In France and French-speaking Canada people love to attach a paper fish to the victims back without being noticed. This is called poisson davril or Aprils fish. On April 1st we Americans often hear incredible stories in the news media. For example on April 1st, 2004 Burger King announced a new item on their menu: the Left-Handed Wopper. It had all condiments rotated by 180 degrees. In 1987 a Los Angeles DJ broadcasted that the LA highway system would be shut down for repairs due to bad condition. the California Highway Patrol reported that they were flooded with calls throughout the day. And as one would expect the authorities of California Department of Transportation didnt find this prank funny and had a hearty talk with the stations managers. The April 1999 edition of Red Herring Magazine included an article about a revolutionary new technology that allowed users to compose and send email telepathically. The company developing this technology was Tidal Wave Communications, led by Yuri Maldini, a computer genius from Estonia. Sounds wonderful! In line with these previously announcements TutorZ announces today that one of his tutors the archaeology tutor and world traveler Dirk Wagner has found the location of the medieval capital Kingslanding as seen in the popular TV show Game of Thrones off the coast of modern day Croatia. The city is entirely burned down presumably by dragon fire and as a result sunk into the Mediterranean Sea.
